Descrizione:
Fred Dobbs è un vagabondo senza lavoro. Conosce un vecchio cercatore d'oro e inizia a lavorare sodo seguendo, con lui e un altro uomo, un nuovo filone. In poco tempo raccolgono una discreta fortuna, ma Dobbs vuole tenersi tutto per sé: colpisce il compagno e fugge. Viene però assalito da dei banditi messicani che lo uccidono per rapinarlo, ma, ignorando il valore di quella polvere gialla, la buttano via per tenersi gli attrezzi e le cavalcature.
