Il protagonista dell'intera saga è Freddy Krueger, un uomo che anni prima della narrazione stuprava segretamente i bambini della sua città, dove lavorava presso una scuola materna come giardiniere. Un giorno i genitori imbestialiti, volendolo linciare, lo inseguirono costringendolo a rifugiarsi presso un edificio abbandonato, e qui gli diedero fuoco, lo seppellirono in un luogo abbandonato in cui nessuno sarebbe andato a cercarlo e continuarono la loro vita come se nulla fosse accaduto.Dopo qualche anno alcuni ragazzi vittime dell'orco, ormai adolescenti, cominciarono ad essere tormentati da feroci incubi. Freddy aveva fatto ritorno, ma non nella realtà, bensì nei loro sogni, dimostrandosi capace di controllarli, di trasformarli in incubi e, fatto ancora più angosciante, di attuare nella realtà quello che realizzava in essi, uccidendo i ragazzi di volta in volta. In questo modo Freddy metteva in atto la sua vendetta contro i figli dei genitori che lo assassinarono, inconsapevolmente colpevoli di aver confessato.
