Sul palco Jim Morrison assume le sembianze di un intenso artista, la cui voce profonda è soltanto parte del personaggio; il chitarrista Robby Krieger, il tastierista Ray Manzarek e il batterista John Densmore completano le libere associazioni di parole del cantante con improvvisazioni di ispirazione jazz. La loro musica non assomiglia a quella di nessun'altro gruppo: chi altro potrebbe eseguire in quel modo canzoni di Kurt Weil e Willie Dixon come "Alabama Song" e "Back Door Man"? Nonostante le citazioni colte Jim Morrison riesce ad evitare di essere troppo pretenzioso e spesso spezza la serietà con un sorriso ironico; ma nei testi delle sue canzoni rimane la profondità della poesia, basta ricordare brani come "When the Music's Over", "The Unknown Soldier" e "The End", che alludono ai problemi sociali di quel periodo.
