Spagna 1944. Durante l'avanzata di Franco la giovane vedova Carmen raggiunge il nuovo compagno Vidal, capitano dell'esercito, con la figlia dodicenne Ofelia. La bambina, che non ama il nuovo patrigno, per sfuggire alla difficile situazione si rifugia in un mondo di fiabe che si materializza con la presenza di un fauno inviato a rivelarle la sua vera identità, quella di principessa di un regno sotterraneo.
