Gerry Lane è in auto con la sua famiglia, nel traffico di Philadelphia, quando scoppia il caos. Orde di persone infette da un male sconosciuto si avventano su chiunque altro, contagiandolo in pochi secondi. Ex impiegato delle Nazioni Unite ritiratosi a vita privata, Lane accetta di tornare in servizio pur di mettere in salvo la propria famiglia su una nave del governo. Parte dunque alla ricerca del luogo del primo contagio, di scorta ad un promettente immunologo, nella speranza di isolare il virus e poter apprestare un vaccino.
