Per dimostrare la propria superiorità "professionale", Gerardo Latini detto "l'artista" racconta a un imbroglione poco accorto la sua lunga carriera di truffatore, cominciata come imitatore comico finito in carcere e proseguita trionfalmente al fianco di "Chinotto" e poi di Elena, ingannando gioiellieri, industriali e ristoratori: peccato che, alla fine del racconto, l'ascoltatore si riveli un commissario di polizia venuto a incastrarlo.
