Un vecchio uomo vende bambù per sopravvivere. Un giorno, nelle canne di bambù, trova una piccola principessa, grande quanto un dito, di nome Kaguya. Quando Kaguya cresce, cinque uomini provenienti da altrettante prestigiose famiglie manifestano il desiderio di sposarla. Kaguya chiedere loro di trovare per lei cinque memorabili regali ma nessuno è in grado di portarle ciò che desidera veramente.
