Gli Yamada sono la tipica famiglia giapponese che vive a Tokyo. Il capofamiglia Takashi lavora in fabbrica, la moglie Matsuko è casalinga, il figlio maggiore Noboru è uno studente; poi ci sono la piccola Nonoko e la nonna Shige, che vive con loro e li aiuta nei lavori domestici.
