Ambientato a Yokohama nel 1963, La collina dei papaveri è una storia d’amore i cui personaggi sono studenti delle scuole superiori chiamati ad essere la “prima generazione” di un “Nuovo Giappone”. Dal momento che il Paese comincia ad uscire dalla devastazione causata dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, la nuova generazione lotta per costruire un futuro migliore, cercando però di non perdere i legami col passato che li ha resi ciò che sono oggi.
