Giappone, 21 settembre 1945. Alla stazione di Kobe, il quattordicenne Seita muore di inedia. Il suo spirito ripercorre i tragici eventi degli ultimi quattro mesi: i bombardamenti americani, il cadavere della madre sfigurato dalle ustioni, il padre a difendere la gloria dell'impero nella sua bianca uniforme da ufficiale di marina. E poi l'orgoglio, la fuga, i furti, la fame. Questa notte spaventosa è rischiarata dai flebili bagliori delle lucciole. Ma all'alba non ne rimarrà più nessuna.
