Taeko Okajima è una giovane donna di 27 anni, impiegata presso una grande azienda di Tokyo. Non è sposata né ha fidanzati, con molto rammarico della madre, che tenta senza successo di combinare un matrimonio per lei. Decide di prendersi una breve vacanza e seguire l'istinto di tornare nei luoghi che avrebbe voluto visitare nella sua infanzia per lavorare, durante le ferie, nell'azienda agricola dei genitori del cognato che produce la cartamina, un colorante per cibi che ricorda lo zafferano, attraverso la raccolta dei fiori di cartamo. Durante il viaggio e il soggiorno il suo pensiero andrà a vecchi amori, ad emozioni antiche, o semplicemente a ricordi della sua infanzia che cadranno lentamente, ma inesorabilmente, su di lei, scavandola, colpendola e cambiandola
