Descrizione:
Nella provincia di Giudea, sotto il governo dell'imperatore Tiberio, il principe Giuda Ben-Hur cerca di mantenere la propria autonomia da Roma dissociandosi al contempo dai turbolenti ribelli Zeloti. Quando il fratello adottivo Messala, romano anziché giudeo, torna a Gerusalemme dalla famiglia che lo ospitò, chiede a Giuda un aiuto nel fermare gli attentatori alla vita del governatore Ponzio Pilato. Ma per una sfortunata coincidenza Ben-Hur viene accusato di cospirazione e Messala non farà nulla per salvarlo: la famiglia del principe è condannata a morte e Ben-Hur viene spedito in una galea a remare in catene, al ritmo dei tamburi dei suoi aguzzini. Solo il desiderio di vendetta alimenta la sua voglia di vivere.
