Lo schianto di un meteorite provoca bizzarri cambiamenti nell’area circostante l’impatto e negli abitanti; le piante producono frutti innaturalmente grandi, ma non commestibili, gli animali mutano e la gente impazzisce. Il meteorite porta infatti con sé una forza corruttiva: un ineffabile “colore” che si colloca in uno spettro impossibile della luce e che infetta l’ambiente circostante, rovinando tutto ciò che tocca. Si segue quindi le vicende della famiglia colpita principalmente da tale influsso (Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur e Brendan Meyer), con gli eventi che si svolgono attorno al cratere fumante posto sulla loro proprietà.
