È la storia di Wladyslaw Szpilman, pianista ebreo polacco, attraverso la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, dall’occupazione di Varsavia all’arrivo dell’Armata Rossa. Il film è diviso in due parti: la prima è incentrata sulla famiglia Szpilman, dall’iniziale mix di stupore e indignazione per le leggi razziali alla reclusione nel ghetto, infine alla deportazione; col treno che parte, e Wladyslaw che rimane giù, inizia la seconda parte, la fuga del pianista, il suo continuo cambiar nascondiglio, sempre a un passo dalla cattura, a mezzo dalla morte, a nessuno dall’orrore che in quegli anni ha avvolto Varsavia – non solo Varsavia.
