Barry Seal, pilota di aerei di linea che arrotonda con il contrabbando, viene contattato dalla CIA per spiare le attività dei guerriglieri sandinisti in Nicaragua. Sarà l'inizio di una serie di opportunità, sempre meno lecite e sempre più rischiose. La storia di Hollywood è piena di autori che hanno scelto di divenire lavoratori su commissione, sviluppando un mimetismo esemplare e prestandosi ai progetti più disparati. Quello di Doug Liman sembrava uno di questi casi, ma in Barry Seal qualche traccia dello spirito che infondeva Swingers, delizioso debutto scritto da Jon Favreau, è possibile ritrovarla.
